Sound Hunt
Hear "Find the letter B" and tap the right card. A free letter game for children aged 3 to 7.
What your child does
The voice says, for example, "Find the letter B." Your child taps the B among the letter cards on the screen. The speaker button says it again whenever they want.
What it practises
- Hearing a letter's name and finding that letter: letter name recognition.
- Telling similar letters apart (such as b, d and p).
Despite the name, Sound Hunt uses letter names, not letter sounds.
How to play
- Open Educating Edgar and tap Sound Hunt.
- Listen for the letter, then tap its card. The right card lifts and the voice says its name.
- A wrong card wiggles, the voice says "Oops, try again!" and repeats the letter.
- After 5 letters, a star and praise finish the round.
It starts with 3 cards and adds one per round, up to 5. In the grown-ups corner you can choose big letters (the default, as most young children recognise capitals first), little letters, or a mix.
Age guide
Made for children of about 3 to 7: preschool or kindy, and the first year of school (Foundation: Kindergarten in NSW and the ACT, Prep in Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania, Reception in SA, Pre-primary in WA, Transition in the NT). Younger children may like to play with a grown-up nearby.
Good to know
- No reading needed: a friendly Australian voice says every instruction and letter name.
- No timers, lives or scores to lose. Wrong answers get a gentle wiggle or bounce and a chance to try again.
- Letter names only (for example "B"), not letter sounds (phonics).
- Letters are shown in Edu NSW ACT Foundation, a free font in the NSW and ACT Foundation handwriting style.
- Grown-ups choose which letters to practise in the grown-ups corner (press and hold the faded gear on the home screen for 3 seconds). It starts with s a t p i n.
- Works on iPad, iPhone, Android and computers, and offline once it has loaded. Free for personal use.
